There’s a growing momentum in Plymouth and Friday’s launch of Team Plymouth at Market Hall made one thing clear: this city is ready to lead.
Backed by central government and shaped by a cross-sector coalition of defence, civic, and business leaders, Team Plymouth represents a new era of regional collaboration and ambition. Team Plymouth is a new partnership between Government, industry and local leaders – building on existing collaboration through Growth Alliance Plymouth. Team Plymouth will continue to champion the city’s strategic assets, drive investment, and ensure that the benefits of growth are felt across all communities.
“Hold on to your hats – we’re in for a thrilling ride,” said Council Leader Tudor Evans, capturing the energy in the room.
With its roots in the national Industrial Strategy, and catalysed by recent developments such as Plymouth’s designation as the UK’s National Centre for Marine Autonomy, Team Plymouth has already helped spark major announcements from partners including Babcock, who confirmed plans for a new Integrated Logistics Hub and Advanced Manufacturing Facility, and Helsing, a cutting-edge AI defence company now establishing its Resilience Factory in Plymouth.
“It’s happening and it has to be in harmony with the city and the region,” said Brigadier Mike Tanner. “Team Plymouth is now a central government-backed body,” he added, emphasising the seriousness and scale of support behind the initiative.

Growth Rooted in Partnership
The central theme of the launch? Partnership across government, industry, academia, and communities.
“It’s about working in partnership to make Plymouth the best place in the UK to live, work, and support defence initiatives,” said a programme partner, highlighting the collaborative approach that will drive delivery alongside local authorities and strategic leaders.
Luke Pollard MP echoed that sentiment:
“It’s about partnership. Our job as Team Plymouth is to shout about what we can offer and work together to deliver it.”
Opportunities for Everyone
Inclusivity and community impact were also high on the agenda.
“We must make sure no one is left behind,” said Plymouth City Council Chief Executive Tracey Lee. “Plymouth has so much potential. This is a very proud day. We’ve worked hard to get here, but the real work starts now. It’s up to us to deliver.”
At the heart of that delivery are anchor employers like Babcock, who reinforced their commitment to local skills and opportunity:
“We’re working with education providers and helping people back into work,” said Managing Director John Gane. “The key is collaboration and we’re proud to be supporting regional growth.”

The formation of Team Plymouth is not just a policy milestone it’s a call to action. With national recognition, new investment, and a united front, Plymouth and South Devon are poised for a transformative decade.
