Plymouth and South Devon Freeport is delighted to be part of a successful bid to the UK Space Agency Training Fund programme to develop a training programme for technicians and engineers in space engineering test methods and best practice.

Led by Plastron UK, in partnership with a range of private sector, educational skills and engineering experts, this ten-month project will address a known capability gap for the space industry, helping to increase practical skills for the current and future workforce.

The role of the Freeport is to ensure alignment with the wider ecosystem and to evaluate its success. The goal is to provide this training to Colleges and Universities as well as support early career professionals, start-ups and cross-sector skills transition.

Currently both Colleges and Universities are being consulted to ensure the training curriculum aligns with existing knowledge and levels.

Charlie Young, Project Lead at Plastron:

“This project is one of several funded by UKSA as part of a major investment into resolving persistent skills shortages in the space industry. As a sector that continues to grow and which delivers economic benefits to many other industrial and business sectors, enabling the workforce in vital, practical skills supports the UK economy whilst supporting UK plc growth for the sector internationally. This work is a continuation of our commitment to empower a resilient, quality-led and safety-conscious workforce in UK space engineering.”
