Plymouth and South Devon (PASD) Freeport welcomed executives from Teledyne Marine, the global leader in underwater technology and marine instrumentation, for a wide-ranging visit to the city’s marine autonomy and defence ecosystem.
The visit included tours of the Freeport’s new factory buildings and development sites with local representatives. Teledyne’s interest in Plymouth and South Devon signals the growing significance of Plymouth as the centre for the UK’s marine autonomy sector.
New Facility at Oceansgate: A Statement of Commitment
A centrepiece of the visit was a tour of Teledyne Marine’s new support facility at Oceansgate, Devonport. The site will be dedicated to supporting Royal Navy users of Teledyne’s underwater and autonomous systems. This marks a significant step in the company’s UK footprint, bringing expert technical support closer to its principal defence customer.
Teledyne Marine secured a Royal Navy contract in March 2026 for autonomous ocean observing systems designed to improve oceanographic data collection for operational planning, maritime safety, and defence activity. The Oceansgate facility positions the company to deliver on this and future contracts with the agility and proximity that Royal Navy operations demand.
Building a Stronger UK Supply Chain
The company has announced a programme to increase volume, improve supply resilience, and meet regional sourcing expectations through collaboration with UK-based suppliers, including a strategic partnership with M Subs and BMT. The Plymouth visit formed part of a broader effort to embed the company more deeply in the UK’s marine and defence industrial base.
Plymouth’s National Centre for Marine Autonomy (NCMA) ecosystem offers a uniquely complementary environment for companies operating in the marine autonomy and underwater technology space. As a central part of the NCMA and the UK’s only Defence Industrial Strategy Zone, the Freeport provides investors with access to tax incentives, customs benefits, and investment-ready employment land across its three Tax Sites.
